It’s time to look into the new features of the Microsoft RDClientSDK v4, that IGEL implemented in the IGEL Windows App – Geo Location Redirection is the first one we will look at!

Geo Location Redirection (attached to the Location service redirection host pool RDP property):

When you have enabled Location service redirection for the hostpool, you will also need to enable it on the client side, and there are a few configuration options:

The default setting for Geo location redirection is set to off, and the options you have is Auto or Fixed, we start with Auto:

When Auto is set, there is a default script that checks the geo location of your external IP. Usually, this works pretty well, though depending on if you exit to internet somewhere else than your current location, it might produce the wrong location. You can change the script to your own defined script, the scritp needs to return a JSON response and within that response you have the possibility to define the latitude and longitude values. As you can see with the current script, that is set to default when you enable Auto, it will read the loc value of the JSON.
IGEL OS by itself does not provide a location service for the device, so this implementation os purely for the IGEL Windows App. You can change the script to a service where you have a subscription, if you end up in being blocked due to too many requests sent.

The second option, Fixed:

This option allows you to very detailed specify the Latitude, Longitude and Altitude of your endpoints. I can see this being useful for devices in buildings/offices targeted by IGEL UMS profiles – where you specify the location based on the building they reside in. This is a very granular specification, and does not require a internet service lookup.

I recorded a short video showing the result of Geo Location Redirection for your Azure Virtual Desktop/Windows 365 desktops, enjoy!
